Our Story
The owners- Lil Easterlin, Tish Easterlin, and Hulet Kitterman--are indeed sisters. (Well, actually, Lil and Hulet are sisters; Tish is married their brother Bill Easterlin.) Their lives are truly intertwined and twisted together. They live across the street from each other and on the same block as their mother, Lillian Easterlin; they raised nine children together; and they are best friends as well as sisters. Their logo depicts three interwoven images of the Celtic icon for the female form.
The idea for this venture began soon after the death of their father Frank Easterlin, Louisville's most enthusiastic supporter. The historic Abbot-Stone building was empty. The sisters saw an opportunity to honor the spirit of Frank Easterlin by promoting downtown Louisville and by providing a venue for artists to sell their work.
The building itself is another twist in the sisters' lives. It was built in the late 1880's by William Wright Abbot, Lil and Hulet's great grandfather, and by William Alexander Stone, whose granddaughter would marry the sisters' uncle--Jim Abbot--in another, much later generation. The bricks for the building were made at the local brickyard on the shores of the Ogeechee River. As young men, Abbot and Stone, known as Billy and Alex, moved to Louisville to find work and became fast friends. Abbot soon left the business to found First National Bank in 1903--known now as Queensborough National Bank and Trust where Tish's husband Bill is the president.
With its interesting architecture and its emphasis on the arts and on handcrafted and fair trade items, Twisted Sisters strives to be a distinctive feature in the streetscape of downtown Louisville.
It matters now more than ever for your purchases to have lasting value. So why handmade and not mass produced? Emily Bargeron, creator of Mamie Ruth Designs, says it best:
1. You are purchasing unique items that are not massed produced.
2. Buying handmade supports designers and small business owners. If you buy handmade, you help someone live their dream.
3. Handmade pieces have life, unlike items that are produced by machines and are basically untouched by human hand.
4. Handmade items appeal to trend setters--not to trend followers.
5. The environmental effects of mass production are a major cause of global warming and of the poisoning of our air, water, and soil. Every item you purchase from a small scale artist helps in the fight to save our planet.
6. Handmade items are made from better materials. Cheap items require the use of cheap materials and fast, careless labor.
