Our History
The owners- Lil, Tish, and Hulet- are indeed sisters and their lives are truly intertwined and twisted together. They live across the street from each other, raised nine children together, and are best friends as well as sisters. They began this venture in the historic Abbot-Stone building in an effort to promote downtown Louisville and to provide a venue for artists to sell their work.
The building itself is another twist in the sisters' lives. It was built in the late 1880's by William Wright Abbot, Lil and Hulet's great grandfather, and by William Alexander Stone, whose granddaughter would marry the sisters' uncle in another, much later generation. The bricks for the building were made at the local brickyard on the shores of the Ogeechee River. As young men, Abbot and Stone, known as Billy and Alex, moved to Louisville to find work and soon became fast friends. Indeed, when Stone married Pearl Sinquefield, Abbot was Stone's best man and accompanied them for a portion of their wedding trip. Although Abbot and Stone maintained their friendship throughout their lives, Abbot soon left the business to found First National Bank in 1903 (known now as Queensborough National Bank and Trust), and Stone continued to operate the general mercantile business.
The original Abbot and Stone mercantile store carried everything one needed from "the cradle to the grave," even caskets! Since the early 1900's a number of different businesses, including a bowling alley, have been housed in this building. Townspeople recall dances held on what was the the mezzanine in honor of President Roosevelt's birthday.
With its interesting architectural features, the Abbot-Stone Building continues to be a distinctive building in the streetscape of downtown Louisville.
